"Punch-up in Piestany". The 1987 World Juniors semi-final game between Russia and Canada set the stage for one of the craziest hockey fights ever. The refs had to flee the ice for their own safety... and the arena shut off the lights to try and stop the mayhem to no avail.
Many of the players involved went on to have long careers in the NHL like Brendan Shanahan and Theoren Fleury who was the instigator in this amazing fight.

Ahh Canada & Russia, they teach them right when still young:) Seriously, no gang banging, no one getting shot, this is the way to release a little aggression.

No video sadly. Another twist of this story is that the two teams met up accidentaly at the local Village in Pizza shop. Same result except since they were not on the ice, police were called.

When I was in Billings we had a game with the Regina Pats.In those days both teams warmed up at the same time. Pucks were put in each teams goal area. Well the Pats came down before we hit the ice and stole our pucks. We were not going to take that so led by Gord Kluzak and Bob Reese our two biggest players we went down to get our pucks back and a few fights too...

That's hysterical. Who takes all your pucks before warm-ups? That should have been written into Slapshot. If you look up this fight on Wikipedia you will be amazed at the the names on the rosters for both teams. I think the guy sitting on the bench not wanting to fight towards the end is Pierre Turgeon. You can see his coach forcing him to get out there.

not Turgeon. that's a Russian player getting sent out. But this is an amazing piece of video. Hey, Tripleggg, you have any video of the fight for the pucks. Man, that would be great to see!

It reminds me of fights in Slap shot.

just wikipediaed this and some more fun facts: of the 20 players that dressed for Canada for this game 19 went on to play in the NHL. And not only was the game suspended both teams were booted from the tournament and all players involved were banned from international competition for 6 months.

the commentators can't stop saying "this has never been seen in international hockey!" all they can describe is their disbelief.

Craziest thing about it is that all of these guys are about 17 and 18 years old.....and they were wearing face masks.

Wow. Stellar fight vid. Anytime the goalies start throwing down you know you're in for a good time.
